Grant Nimmo's new paintings

A couple of years ago my dad and I bought this 5x6 foot painting from Grant Nimmo. It hangs next to my bed. Every day I go to sleep and wake up looking at it. It bring me great joy. There is an enormous amount of peace and stillness that he has created within it, a quality that is rare in a lot of paintings.

Here are a few of his latest paintings. They make me want to pack up my bags, leave the city and live in the wilderness. Maybe when I'm older and crazier.

Jo, Zette and Jocko

The lesser known series made by the talented Mr.Herge. I used to have a couple of these as a kid. Though I never really got into Jo, Zette and Jocko as much as Tintin.

2012 - The New Year

It's almost here. The big year. 2012.

My Friend the BEAR

I've made an app! It's called 'My Friend the BEAR'. It's a simple interactive kid's book app. It's loads of fun for your kids and yourself (if you reading novels a bit too hard.) Plus it's only 99c! Check it out.

There's also the My Friend website for more Information, Free Downloadable Activities and Bear Tips.

Drawing Workshop at Scotch College

A couple of months back I had the privilege of holding a drawing workshop at Scotch College. A competition was held where the top three drawings recieved a tshirt that I made and the winner recieved an original drawing. I was quite impressed with the quality of drawings. Future talent is out there.

Here are a couple of photos one of the teachers took.

One of the winners. Fantastic drawing.

A scan of the drawing I gave first prize.

Milo

My friend had a baby boy a month back. His middle name is Milo. I hoping to become his Godfather. Unfortunately my friend doesn't believe in God, so it's going to be hard to get that title. So, I'm trying to convince him with bodgy photoshop mock ups. Here's one of them.

Drawing on kids' faces

I found these photos from my little cousin's party. The adults let me cut sick and paint on the kids' faces. Drawing for kids is the best thing because they get so happy. However, they can be quite specific and demanding about what they want. That's cool kiddies, just as long as you're happy.

Fire and Ice

Lava is one of my favourite hot things, as well as Chilli Crab and my wife.

See through T-Rex model

I bought this see-through model of a T-Rex the other day, from the best store in Melbourne, Wunderkammer. My wife didn't understand why I wanted a two-faced 50 cm dinosaur, but I thought things like this didn't need justificaiton.

Standing by while the world burns

An amazing photo of a group of people enjoying the sun while the twin towers burn down in the background. Even though it probably wasn't their intention to be caught like that, it's a spectacular symbol of how we, as human beings, have the ability to move on. Saligia Beer Mural Process

Here's a blog post I put up on the Scotch College Library Blog, when I did a guest workshop there a couple of months ago.

A designer, from an agency called Mentally Friendly, has a client that was fond of my work. His client is a computer company that have decided to brew their own beer. What started off as a hobby has now become a little more serious, they have even installed a bar within their own studio! They have named their beer ‘Saligia’, which is a Latin acronym for the Seven Deadly Sins. The designer’s idea was to have a mural of the seven demons brewing the beer, so it was educational as well as fun. We decided I could make a better drawing if I did it on my computer, then print it out on vinyl and stick it on, rather than me fly up there and paint it on.

Here’s a reference picture that shows the tone of what they wanted the demons to look like. More tongue in cheek than a serious looking Lord of the Rings style demon. Yoda and Ewoks!

They also gave me some information of how the brewing process works. Here’s one of the pictures.

I sent them a reference picture from a Japanese film called Steamboy, as a guide to what I saw it looking like; old cooper, ridiculous amount of pipes, nuts and bolts, tubes, heaps of detail.

Then I came up with a rough sketch of one of the demons and an even rougher sketch of the layout.

They loved it! So I used that sketch to come up with a more detailed rough image. First, I drew the different areas that need to be included. Then I drew the demons, making sure that they all looked different from each other. This requires a lot of rubbing out and redrawing. If you look at any good cartoons you’ll see that there’s a variation among the main characters, while still keeping in the same style. It’s a delicate balance. Cartoons are a serious business!

I then put down some colour, to give a rough indication of a colour palette. I decided to go with the green to match the lime green bench top they have in their studio. The demons were made red to contrast with the green.

Here’s a rough placement guide to show them what it’ll look like when it’s up.

They loved that too. The only change was to make sure I spell Saligia correctly.
Now I have to go over the image and make sure the lines look nice. As I do this, more detail and texture will be added. It’s important when you’re tracing over something to make sure you can hardly see what you’re drawing, so you’re creating an entire new artwork rather than just going over it.

And here's how it turned out...

C2 Media About Page

I did these illustration for C2 Media a while ago. Even though I do some quite complicated drawings, I still find that the simple ones bring me the most joy. I used the small ink drawings from magazines such as The New Yorker and The Monthly as inspiration.

Ike and Tina Turner

A mixtape I burnt for my lovely wife. The talented Mr.Oostuizen, from Takt studios, was the second person to introduce me to them; the first was my mum, she used to put the cd on and sing along with the lyrics in the booklet. Good times.
